Boardroom apprentice

IPSA is a member of the Boardroom Apprenticeship Programme which aims to help those who would like to serve on a public or third sector board to learn and gain experience.

Our Boardroom Apprentice is John Midgley. He started his 12-month term on 2 January 2024. John will attend all Board meetings and have the opportunity to attend sub-committee meetings. He will also undertake project work and attend eight Department for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities learning days.

John practises a portfolio career as a consultant professional geoscientist and engineer and is a Chartered Geologist, Chartered Scientist, Chartered Environmentalist, and Interim Chartered Engineer. He holds five degrees in arts and sciences and is currently studying for a master’s degree in Sustainability Leadership.

John has lived and worked in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Caucasus working on hydrocarbon exploration in remote locations, and since 2008 has worked exclusively on carbon capture and storage.

In the past decade, he has been employed as Technical Manager at the British Geological Survey and represents the UK as a carbon storage technical expert on committees, drafting and managing international standards.

He has also served in the Army Reserve and has worked as a butcher, TV extra, and delivery driver, and trained as both a fireman and first responder. He brings a wide range of experience and practical knowledge to the Board.
