MP's expenses, food and mortgage claims
Request
If an MP claims £100 on average throughout the year for FOOD in the ministerial home (part time residence) is this not questioned.
When an MP secures a mortgage on a second home (ministerial) I assume he/she claims the payments from the state, if he/she keeps this home and the value increases while it is in Government hands, when sold on the open market, WHO gets the difference.
Response
Your questions relate to what items MPs may claim for. These are detailed in the Scheme of MPs’ Business Costs & Expenses, which can be found on our website.
In the top right-hand corner, select the financial year you are interested in. Then select the ‘individual claims’ spreadsheet from the drop-down menu, and download the spreadsheet. This gives you access to the spreadsheet. The spreadsheet may be downloaded as a .csv file and saved as in Excel.
Specific categories of claims may be selected by using the filters on the top row or by searching the spreadsheet for specific terms.
Additionally, all MPs have a profile page with information about their expenses broken down into categories, for example, Travel > Own vehicle, etc. Clicking on the ‘i’ to the right of each entry opens a pop-up with more information. The A-Z list of MPs may be accessed on our website.
To answer your questions specifically, MPs can only claim for food and subsistence when they are away from home on official business. MPs also cannot claim the cost of a mortgage.
