Cost of increase in MPs’ salaries in 2016-17

Request

The total cost to the taxpayer of the 2016 increase in salary and whether IPSA intend to recommend that future increases to the salary will track salary increases elsewhere in the public sector.

Response

IPSA holds the information that you have requested.

A review of MPs’ remuneration was conducted by IPSA between 2012 and 2015. Full details of that review, including consultation documents and reports, can be found on our website at the following address: http://parliamentarystandards.org.uk/payandpensions.

IPSA published its determination on MPs’ pay in July 2015, where we committed to adjusting MPs’ pay for the rest of this Parliament at the same rate as changes in average earnings in the public sector earnings. These adjustments take effect each April and are based on figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). IPSA has a statutory obligation to undertake a review MPs’ pay at the start of the first year of the next Parliament.

As of 1 April 2016, the annual basic salary for all MPs is currently £74,962, an increase of 1.3% on the previous year. The total cost to the taxpayer of this increase was £677,176.50, which takes into account the basic salary increase and additional national insurance contributions.
