Number of staff members, by MP

Request

Under a FOI request, could I ask how many staff each currently elected MP employs?

Further to the above just a numerical total per MP and not individual names.

Response

IPSA holds the information that you request.

You will be aware that the MPs’ Scheme of Business Costs and Expenses (‘the Scheme’) states that ‘Staffing Expenditure may be claimed to meet the cost incurred in the provision of staff to assist with the performance of an MP's parliamentary functions’.  You may also be aware that the details of annual staffing expenditure is available on our website.

The number of staff currently working for each MP will include, for example, the following:

  • Full-time and part-time staff paid through IPSA’s payroll (including those on casual contracts or carrying out short-term work);

  • employed interns; and

The figures relate only to the number of individuals who currently receive payment through IPSA’s payroll. They do not represent the full-time equivalent figure, and do not therefore necessarily reflect the staffing capacity, as such, of an MP’s office.

The data are correct as of 16 February 2015, and reflect the number of individuals who received payment, by MP, in January 2015.  As the figures relate to the number of individuals paid in January 2015, where an individual is employed to provide cover for another staff member (such as maternity cover), this will result in both individuals being included – even if only one is actively working in the office at the time.

Annex A lists, by MP, the number of individuals who are currently active on the payroll.
