Number of casual contracts registered with IPSA, by MP, in 2012 and 2013
Members of Parliament may employ individuals on casual contracts, whereby the staff member is paid an hourly rate rather than an annual salary. You can view a sample contract on our website (http://parliamentarystandards.org.uk), located under the IPSA for MPs tab.
Individuals employed on casual contracts may include any short-term staff taken on – for example, to provide paternity, maternity or sickness cover – part-time as well as full-time staff and apprentices and interns whose employment conditions have fulfilled the conditions set out in paragraphs 7.8 and 7.9 of the MPs’ Scheme of Business Costs and Expenses (‘the Scheme’).
We have interpreted your request for the total number of people employed by MPs on casual contracts as the number of casual contracts that were registered with IPSA during the 2012 and 2013 calendar years.
IPSA holds records of all those who have been registered with us during the 2012 and 2013 calendar years. However, if an individual was initially employed on a casual contract and subsequently moved, without a break in service, to a fixed-term or permanent contract, the information we hold relates only to their most recent contract.
Please note, these figures provided at Annex A do not indicate either that the MPs listed currently employ any individuals on casual contracts, nor the length of those contracts, many of which may have been very short-term. Further, MPs may specify within individual contracts a minimum number of hours staff members are expected to work; the figures do not therefore indicate the nature of the individuals’ working arrangements.
