Applications to the Contingency Fund and pay increases for MPs' staff

Request

  1. How many MPs have applied to the ‘contingency fund’ in respect of the levels of their overall staffing budgets and how many requests have been a) accepted and b) refused?

  2. How many MPs have requested pay increases for staff, which takes them beyond IPSA’s annual staff budget limit, and how many requests have been a) accepted and b) refused?

  3. For how many staff in total have such pay increases been requested and how many have been a) accepted and b) refused?

Response

To the end of January in total 35 MPs have applied to the contingency fund in respect of their staffing budgets of which 34 applications were approved, either in full or in part and 1 application was refused.

A total of 5 MPs have requested pay increases for staff, which would take them beyond the staffing budget. I can advise that 1 application was approved in part and 4 applications were refused. Again, this figure is based on full applications on which the Contingency Panel took a decision.

A total of 5 applications for pay increases covering 13 members of staff have been submitted. I can advise that 1 application covering 3 members of staff was approved and 4 applications covering 10 members of staff was refused.
