Under the Freedom of information act please can you send me the Members of Parliament pay increase percentages and dates including when they were voted on and accepted and the month & year that they where implemented over the last 15 years.
As you may be aware, IPSA began operations on 7 May 2010. Prior to 7 May 2010, the administration of MPs’ salaries, business costs and expenses was the responsibility of the Department of Resources at the House of Commons. For information relating to MPs’ pay prior to 2010, you may wish to contact the House of Commons FOI team at the following email address: FOICommons@parliament.uk.
IPSA does not hold any information on votes conducted in Parliament. This information may be located within Hansard, the official report of Parliamentary debates, which can be found at the following address: https://hansard.parliament.uk/.
Responsibility for reviewing and determining MPs’ pay was transferred to IPSA in 2011 under the terms of the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act 2010. MPs’ pay is now determined by IPSA independently of Government and Parliament; MPs no longer vote on their pay.
You can find out more about MPs’ pay since 2010 on our website at the following address: http://parliamentarystandards.org.uk/payandpensions. This provides the annual salaries of MPs’ since IPSA was established in 2010 and the date at which their salary was amended. These changes were determined and implemented by IPSA and were not voted on by MPs in Parliament.
The FOIA states that information that is accessible by other means is not subject to release. Therefore, as the information you have requested relating to MPs’ pay since 2010 is already available on our website, it is exempt from disclosure under section 21 of the FOIA (information accessible to applicant by other means).
As you may be aware, we conducted a review of MPs’ remuneration between 2012 and 2015. Our first consultation document, published in October 2012, provided a full background to the issue of MPs’ pay. Key events relating to MPs’ pay since 1911 are documented in a table at page 15, which may be of interest. The consultation document can be found on our website at the following address: http://parliamentarystandards.org.uk/payandpensions/Documents/02.%20Reviewing%20MPs'%20Pay%20and%20Pensions%20-%20A%20Consultation.pdf.
