MPs renting from other MPs

Request

Under a FOI request could I ask which MP's rent a residence in London from a current or former MP at this time and additionally what the monthly rent is?

Response

IPSA holds the information that you request.

In our annual publication of claims made in 2013-14, we published details relating to MPs who rent property from other MPs under the MPs’ Scheme of Business Costs and Expenses (‘the Scheme’).

You can find this information on our publication website.

To download the data, you will need to select the financial year 2013-14, and then click the link to download all MPs' annual expenditure data for 2013 – 2014.

Starting from this year, we will be publishing the names of all landlords from whom MPs rent property under the terms of the Scheme. This information will be published on 10 September 2015, as part of the annual publication for 2014-15, and will contain the information you have requested.

Section 22(1) of the FOIA states that information intended for future publication is exempt from release. We have considered whether the public interest in releasing the information outweighs the application of the exemption. It is our opinion that the public interest is best served by publishing a full list of landlords from whom MPs have rented property over the course of the financial year rather than on an ad hoc basis, as in this way a clear and complete set of information is published, avoiding any potential confusion. It is for this reason that the application of the exemption outweighs the public interest in disclosure at this stage.
