Casual contracts registered in 2012-13 and 2013-14 by MP

Request

You made a request for the number of casual contracts registered with IPSA by each MP in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

Response

IPSA holds the information that you request.

Members of Parliament may employ individuals on casual contracts, whereby the staff member is paid an hourly rate rather than an annual salary.  You can view a sample contract on our website (http://parliamentarystandards.org.uk), located under the IPSA for MPs tab. MPs may specify within individual contracts a minimum number of hours staff members are expected to work

Individuals employed on casual contracts may include any short-term staff taken on – for example, to provide paternity, maternity or sickness cover – part-time as well as full-time staff and apprentices and interns whose employment conditions have fulfilled the conditions set out in paragraphs 7.8 and 7.9 of the MPs’ Scheme of Business Costs and Expenses (‘the Scheme’). As such, some individuals may have only been in the MP’s employment for a very short period.

IPSA holds records of all those who have been registered with us during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 financial years. This information is provided at Annex A.  However, if an individual was initially employed on a casual contract and subsequently moved, without a break in service, to a fixed-term or permanent contract, the information we hold relates only to their most recent contract.

Please note, the figures provided at Annex A do not indicate either that the MPs listed currently employ any individuals on casual contracts.
