Details of any restrictions imposed upon IPSA in relation to MPs' pay and pensions

Request

Can you please tell me if any restrictions were imposed on you for your latest pay recommendations for MP's?

The government impose restrictions of 1% max increase on the public sector independent pay review bodies, who would be responsible for imposing restrictions on your recommendations?

Response

No restrictions were imposed and, therefore, IPSA does not hold information in response to your request.

IPSA is an independent statutory body. We were established the by the Parliamentary Standards Act 2009 and our powers are set out in that act and the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act 2010.

The Parliamentary Standards Act 2009 (as amended by the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act 2010) makes clear that the determination of MPs’ pay is a matter for IPSA alone. Consequently, it is not possible for the Government, or any other body, to impose restrictions on our review of MPs’ pay and pensions.
