Tax on MPs' salaries

Request

Of the current 649 MPs in Parliament, please can you state how many of their parliamentary salaries are taxed at source and how many of their salaries are paid directly into companies (for example service companies), thereby leaving individuals to arrange their own tax affairs rather than using the PAYE system? I would like to ask the same question of any Peers who have been in receipt of a ministerial salary at any point from June 2010 onwards.

Response

IPSA holds some of the information that you request.  IPSA does not make any payments to MPs through third parties.  If this enquiry concerns the recent publicity about the use of service companies to avoid PAYE, we can confirm that all MPs are paid through the payroll and are subject to PAYE.

IPSA is not the responsible authority for paying Ministerial salaries or for making payments to Peers.  For Freedom of Information requests relating to Ministerial salaries, including those made to any peers in receipt of a Ministerial salary, you may wish to contact the Cabinet Office at the following email address: foiteam@cabinet-office.x.gsi.gov.uk.
