MPs staff

Request

I note that MPs can employ staff who are Councillors for the local authority in which the MPs constituencies are based.

In view of the fact that MPs have to take up cases and intervene with the way Councils delivery services and treat service users, why is this not considered to be a conflict of interest?

Response

We advise that you submit your question to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.

IPSA does not set restrictions on whether MPs’ staff members can be councillors or take up any other secondary employment.

MPs would need to manage the work of their staff members in their office.
